Texas National Bank Earns LiFE Award for Expanding FinancialWellness Across the Rio Grande Valley
Texas National Bank's commitment to financial education and community impact recently earned statewide recognition through the Texas Bankers Association's LiFE Award, presented during the association's 141st Annual Convention. The award recognizes financial institutions that go above and beyond to promote financial awareness through meaningful programs and community engagement. For Texas National Bank, the honor reflects its ongoing efforts to equip individuals and families with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed financial decisions and build stronger financial futures.
“We view the LiFE Award as an honor that recognizes our efforts to promote financial literacy throughout our community. We want it to serve as a reminder that we are not stopping here and that we remain dedicated to helping our community every step of the way.” — Hector Sanchez
For Hector Sanchez, Vice President and Branch Manager of Texas National Bank's Mission location, accepting the award on behalf of the bank was both an honor and a reflection of the organization's long-standing commitment to the communities it serves. He noted that being recognized at the statewide level made the achievement especially meaningful and reinforced the importance of continuing the bank's financial education efforts.
Building Financial Wellness Through Education
At the center of the award-winning initiative is the belief that financial wellness should be accessible, practical and easy to understand. That philosophy has been championed by Rey Garcia, Chief Credit Officer at Texas National Bank, who helped develop the bank's Financial Wellness Program while also leading the institution's community development strategy as part of its mission as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI).
Garcia's passion for financial wellness is both professional and personal. Before encouraging others to improve their financial health, he first applied many of the program's principles to his own finances. That experience strengthened his belief that meaningful progress comes from consistent, intentional steps rather than complicated financial strategies.
“It doesn't have to be complicated. It may look different for everyone, but I think the roadmap is consistent. It's about taking deliberate steps toward addressing the different pillars we have laid out. It starts with building your skills and education, which leads to the second pillar of financial wellness: earning power and income.” — Rey Garcia
Garcia encourages individuals to focus on foundational financial habits such as building financial knowledge, increasing earning potential, saving consistently, managing debt responsibly and protecting wealth. Together, these principles create a roadmap that can help individuals and families achieve long-term financial stability.
Reaching Communities Where They Are
As a CDFI serving the Rio Grande Valley, Texas National Bank recognizes the importance of providing financial education and banking resources to underserved communities. According to Garcia, creating value means investing in the people and communities the bank serves.
That mission is carried out through responsible financial products, bilingual resources and educational initiatives designed to meet people where they are. Garcia is particularly proud of the Financial Wellness team led by Sanchez, which has grown from small community presentations into a program that has reached more than a thousand students and community members. Through presentations, digital tools and practical financial guidance, the team helps individuals make informed financial decisions while encouraging important conversations about money at home.
The LiFE Award serves as recognition of both the program innovation and the bank's deeper commitment to strengthening the communities it serves. Garcia believes that one of the greatest barriers facing many individuals is a lack of financial awareness, and he sees education as one ofthe most effective ways to build confidence and create opportunities for future generations.
A Lasting Impact Beyond the Classroom
One experience stands out for Sanchez when reflecting on the impact of financial education. During what was expected to be a small classroom presentation at a local school, he found himself speaking to a group of students with disabilities who were preparing to transition from high school into the workforce.
The students quickly turned the session into one of the most engaging presentations he had ever led. They asked thoughtful questions about retirement planning, homeownership, vehicle purchases and other long-term financial goals. Their curiosity and forward-thinking mindset left a lasting impression on him.
“You could tell the students were already thinking about the challenges they may face. They were thinking ahead and asking questions about retirement, buying a home and how many vehicles they should own. I left feeling inspired because it reminded me why we do what we do.” — Hector Sanchez
For Sanchez, the experience reinforced the broader purposeof financial wellness education: empowering people to plan confidently for their future regardless of their circumstances. He believes that with the rightresources, partnerships and support systems, there are no limits to what individuals can achieve.
Helping Students Make Informed Financial Decisions
Part of Texas National Bank's educational efforts include helping students understand the financial realities associated with higher education. Garcia highlighted the bank's "Our Money Matters (OMM)"tool as an important starting point for students learning financial concepts, particularly those related to paying for college.
While banks typically do not serve as primary providers of college funding, Garcia focuses on helping students understand credit, debt and responsible borrowing. He emphasizes the importance of understanding how interest accumulates on student loans and how to evaluate which types of debt support long-term goals.
Through the TNB Foundation, a nonprofit affiliate of Texas National Bank, high school seniors also have access to scholarship opportunities and guidance related to FAFSA, student aid and additional scholarship resources. The goal is not to direct students toward a particular educational path, but to ensure they fully understand the financial limplications of their decisions and can choose options that align with their personal and career goals.
Looking Ahead
For Sanchez, financial wellness begins with a commitment to lifelong learning. He encourages individuals to continue educating them selves, ask questions and seek guidance whenever needed. He believes many people are willing to help when approached, regardless of their title or position.
He also stresses the importance of maintaining a long-term perspective when working toward financial independence and recognizes the important role community banks and local organizations play in supporting that journey through education, outreach and community involvement.
“We want to ensure that our community receives the right information. We have resources available and our doors are always open to help answer questions. We encourage people to keep educating themselves and to never stop learning. Don't be afraid to pick up the phone and ask for help.” — Hector Sanchez
Garcia echoed with the importance of surrounding yourself with people who share your values and commitment to service. He praised the culture of collaboration within the organization and expressed appreciation for Sanchez’s leadership and dedication to financial wellness.
He also encouraged community members to connect with Texas National Bank through its website, social media channels or local branches, emphasizing that accessibility, hospitality and relationship-building remain central to the bank's approach. As Garcia noted, the organization's guiding principle remains simple: "We Are Friendly."
“Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Get started and begin taking deliberate steps forward. I am incredibly proud of our team and grateful for the opportunity to serve our community. We are here to help at Texas National Bank, and we invite anyone to walk through our doors and connect with us.” — Rey Garcia
